Everyone’s done parasailing, paragliding and the likes of it
all in the name of adventure sports. We know that’s no big deal for you.
It’s time we take the danger quotient ten notches higher. Here comes a
list of the most daredevil sports in the world that will redefine the
term ‘adventure’. Not for the weak hearted though!
Yes, you climb rocks and boulders and even mountains. No, you’re not
harnessed on to anything, nor do you have any safety gear. Ascending the
2,224 foot high Regular Northwest Face route on Yosemite's Half Dome
might take multiple days but the adrenaline rush will be worth it. Coat
your hands well with magnesium for a tiny drop of sweat can cause your
grip to loosen and make you fall. Death is creeping behind and you gotta
do everything you can to escape it. Don’t worry; there are no injuries –
just death.
Just the mention of this would send a chill down your spine. Base
jumping involves taking off cliff higher than the sky! One out of sixty
participants die. Yes, you’re given a parachute. But parachutes fail
too, just saying. There aren’t many men who can gather the courage to
jump off an altitude of whooping 7,220 metres.
Each one of you dreams of flying high like a superhero, like you own
the sky. You’d think its fun and exciting, but it’s not. It is said that
it takes a man to skydive 200 times to eliminate all risks of dying
during this sport. The thrill and adventure is something not all can
handle. The Eiger stands tall at 3970 metres above the sea level and is
the highest wing suit flying spot ever recorded.
Dressed in white clothes with a red waistband and neckerchief, the
runners are chased by ferocious bulls. The race is one of the deadliest
and the most popular sports in Spain and lasts for about a few minutes –
that’s what it takes for the bull to decide whether you’re going to
live or die. Of course, the runners are given a narrow escape to exit
the track but not many have the presence of mind to use it when they
have a bull chasing them at a speed of 35 miles per hour! Life gives you
a second chance, the bull doesn’t.
Located in the mouth of Hout Bay, Cape Town, The Dungeons promise
gigantic and cold waves for people who like to get on their tow-boards
and brave the sea. It’s not just the sheer size of the waves that is
adventurous; it’s the presence of sharks down below that sometimes
scares the surfers to death. Yes, you heard it right. Dungeons inhabit
the biggest sharks known to man!
For all you adrenaline junkies, cave diving is a must. Underwater
diving in caves can expose you to your deepest fears you never knew
existed. This sport needs more than just guts to lunge into the depths
of unknown waters. A lot of people dive fearlessly but never find their
way back up. The Blue Hole in Belize is a thousand feet in diameter!
You’d be thrilled to know that the limestone cave system formed
underwater dates back to the ice age! Who knows, you might find fossils,
treasures or even dead bodies of those who dived in but never returned.
If you think you’re an animal lover, wait till Australia’s largest
saltwater crocodiles come knocking at your glass cage. Enter the ‘Cage
of Death’ and plunge into the Darwin’s Crocosaurus Cove, famous for
inhabiting the deadliest reptiles ever, and survive the terror attack.
Even though you are safely enclosed in a glass box, a lot of men still
do not have the courage to endure the fright.
The rapids of Deschutes can sometimes devour even the most hard-core
rafters! This rough 21km stretch is explosive, thrilling and
treacherous. The 63 rapids that you’d come across are all graded III or
above. They are so dangerous that they are almost difficult to survive
through. You might encounter some powerful blows by the water, huge
rocks and fatal hazards that can damage all your rafting equipment and
prove to be fatal.
Heli-skiing is primarily about skiing in an untouched, natural site.
One is taken to the site via a helicopter. Of course, you do not need to
hike to the site, but that is because the sport is already too much to
handle. The Monashees in the British Columbia are not for novices. The
steep pitched terrain and a seamless expanse of snow where you’re lost
before you can know it will send chills down your spine at the first
sight. The vertical drop is a whooping 100,000 feet!
Catching waves by paddling with hand is an obsolete technique now. It
doesn’t allow you to surf the bigger waves. Some adrenalists who wanted
to catch waves higher than 30 feet came up with the concept of tow-in
surfing wherein a surfer uses artificial assistance to catch faster
moving waves. Mavericks offers wave that go beyond 80 feet in height!
Only a few surfers risk to surf these hazardous waves. Are you one of
them?
While in other modes of diving, one relies on holding breath or
pumping air from the surface, scuba divers have their own compressed
breathing air. Being a part of the underwater life, witnessing
ship-wrecks and colourful corals, rare species of marine animals is of
course, an enlightening and an amazing experience but the intolerable
pressure under water can cause severe injuries. A stretch so vast that
it is visible from space, The Great Barrier Reef offers a mind-boggling
experience as you dive into the fascinating world of 1,500 shipwrecks,
and countless marine species to discover. It could take you a lifetime
to explore it all.
Remember how you always wanted to fly in the air? Well, this is the
sport for you. Only, it might feel like a nightmare instead of a dream
if you’re not brave-hearted. A wing walker is fastened on to the top of
an airplane so that he is standing up in the air as the airplane hovers
around doing all it can to scare the guts out of him. Imaging flying at a
speed of 200mph, thousands of feet above the ground in nothingness!
Highlining is an astounding experience, a stunning mental challenge!
You need nerves of steel to walk unsupported on a highline supported on
two farther ends of canyons or rock formations. The support may save you
from dying but once you’ve fallen off the highline, getting back up is
the trickiest part. The adrenaline may not allow you to control your
body movements and thus, you may fall (read die). More than the physical
balance, your mental balance is what you need the most.
Ascending frozen waterfalls, icefalls and of course, ice-capped
mountains is the one of most daring sports in the world. While there are
a number of achievable ice climbing tours all over the world, we choose
the Helmcken Falls Spray Cave for it is paradise for those who like it
high, steep, wild and almost impossible to conquer. It has always been
touted as the world’s hardest ice-climbing site ever.
While bungee jumping off a 80-something-metre high cliff is the
ultimate adrenaline rush for a lot of you, we’re sure there are some
amongst you are looking for better challenges. The Royal Gorge Bridge in
USA is the highest suspension bridge in the world, standing tall at 321
metres! Look down and you can literally see death. Even the bravest of
braves cannot bungee jump from that height!
In this aerial sport, the glider harnessed to a wing-foot launches
himself off a cliff into the endless sky. The equipment requires one to
shift body weight in order to control the direction and speed. The most
thrilling part is that the gliding equipment is non-motorised and you’re
the only one controlling it. It takes a lot of specialisation and is
definitely not a child’s play. The Alps provide the most challenging
height along with magnificent views that are scary yet stunning at the
same time.
Though it is an actual sport supposed to be played by professionals,
with the right training, you should be set to experience it first hand
as well. Bicycle Motocross racing requires strength, swiftness, rapidity
and guts, of course! The tracks have life-threatening obstacles like
mud tracks and rugged terrains. Racing couldn’t get any tougher. Only
men can handle the risk, not boys.
This sport requires you to jump from an airplane and survive the free
fall before you land using a parachute. A lot of people chicken out one
second before their turn to step out of the aircraft into nothingness.
It is one of the most extreme sports and takes a lot; we repeat a lot of
guts to perform. Fox Glacier is an 8-mile-long glacier located in the
remote Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of New
Zealand’s South Island and provides exquisite views of the Tasman Sea.
Normal people would run as far away as possible from volcanoes. But
then there are those who want to defy death. This thrill-seeking
adventure is an insane sport. Volcano divers gear up in safety suits and
descend a volcano’s 41 degree slope at speeds up to 50 miles per hour!
It is dangerous beyond your imagination. Obscurely extreme, volcano
boarding must be on your to-do list if you like challenging life.
This one combines two of the deadliest adventure sports on this list.
Jumping off a dizzying height and heading straight to the territory of
man-eating crocodiles – twice the amount of adrenaline rush! In a
shocking news, a woman bungee jumped into the crocodile infested waters
of Zambezi River, Australia. Even though she survived, a lot of
enthusiasts took a note of this life-threatening adventure sport. Can
you handle it?
